In 1897 Mrs Adelaide Hoodless campaigned for lectures and demonstrations in domestic science and homemaking to be made available to women and from this sprang the whole WI movement that we know today.
The first WI was formed in Anglesey, Wales, in September 1915 and two years later the National Federation of Women's Institutes was formed. The purpose of the WI today is to inspire women and to be a force for change as well as providing a unique educational opportunity and a chance to acquire new skills. Today the WI has around 212,000 members in 6,600 WIs IN 2015 WE CELEBRATED 100 YEARS SINCE THE FORMATION OF THE W.I. Photo above: Four members all dressed up for the Buckingham Palace garden party |
